FAQ
An Audiologist holds a Master’s or Doctoral degree in Audiology and is regulated by the College of Audiologists and Speech-Language Pathologists of Ontario (CASLPO). Their scope of practice includes:
- diagnosing and treating hearing loss (adults & children)
- prescribing and dispensing hearing aids
- cerumen management (ear wax removal)
- diagnosing and treating vestibular balance issues
Audiologists work in hospitals, private clinics, and research or university settings.
A Hearing Instrument Specialist completes a college diploma program and primarily provides adult hearing tests and hearing aid dispensing. They are represented by an association, not a regulatory college.
Key difference: a regulatory college protects the public; an association represents members.
No, OHIP no longer covers ear wax removal. At Bloor Hearing Clinic, ear wax removal is $95. An office visit (if no wax found after otoscopy) is $45.
Cerumen management should be performed by trained professionals such as Audiologists, ENT doctors, or Hearing Instrument Specialists. Our clinic provides safe, gentle ear wax removal using clinical tools and techniques.

Some Audiologists hold a clinical doctoral degree, but Audiologists are not medical doctors. They are regulated healthcare professionals with a Master’s and/or Doctorate in Audiology, governed by CASLPO.
They are trained to:
- diagnose and treat hearing loss in adults & children
- recommend or program hearing aids
- perform ear wax removal
- assess and manage vestibular balance disorders
Audiologists practice in clinics, hospitals, and university research settings.
Hearing aids are partially funded through the Assistive Devices Program (ADP).
ADP provides up to $1,000 total ($500 per ear) every 3–5 years.
At Bloor Hearing Clinic, we complete the ADP paperwork for you. Eligible patients do not pay the ADP-funded amount upfront. We help choose hearing aids based on comfort, lifestyle, and budget. Payment plans are available.
Routine hearing tests and wax removal in clinics are not covered by OHIP. However, most private or work insurance plans include audiology coverage. We provide detailed invoices for reimbursement and can help verify your benefits.
Ear wax removal is generally not painful, though pressure or mild discomfort can be normal, especially with impacted wax. Softening the wax beforehand makes the process easier and more comfortable.
For best comfort, we recommend using ear drops or oil to soften wax before your appointment. Our Audiologist has extensive experience, including removing deeply lodged wax and even unexpected objects (like bracelet beads from curious kids!).
Most insurance plans include Audiology coverage. We’ll help you check what your plan covers.
